Church in the World Ministries

Social Justice Ministries of the Cathedral

The mission of Church in the World (CIW) Ministries is to work boldly for justice, reconciliation and peace among all people, to resist injustices perpetuated against the earth and its inhabitants, and to engage the entire community of Saint Mark's by creating awareness of and fostering responsibility for our jmpact on the world.

The Cathedral CIW Ministries are currently represented in the following ways:

AIDS CareTeam
Ecology/Spirituality Group
Habitat for Humanity
Hunger Offering
Human Sexuality Group
Jubilee Northwest
Noel House Shelter

Russian Parish Partnership
Saint Brigid’s Banquet

AIDS CareTeam

The AIDS CareTeam, trained and supported by Multifaith Works, helps people affected by HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening illnesses. CareTeams connect with one CarePartner at a time, and the hours and commitment are adjustable. Teams meet monthly for support, communication and information and are led by trained team leaders. Each CareTeam member may feel called to contribute something different to the process.

Ecology/Spirituality Group

The Ecology/Spirituality Group brings a focus of care and justice for all of God’s creation (human and non-human, local to global), within our own lives and the life of our congregation.  As stewards of the earth, we recognize the importance of acting thoughtfully, responsibly, and justly as we wrestle with environmental issues and search for ways to cherish and protect our world.  The group’s projects have brought Fair Trade, shade grown, organic coffee to Sunday coffee hours, hikes and walks to experience God in nature, and informational study groups, adult forums and Wednesday night series.

We are exploring a “greening” process at Saint Mark’s whereby the Cathedral community might move toward modeling environmental sustainability throughout all dimensions of congregational life.  For our story (with pictures) about the greening of St. Mark’s, check out Earth Ministry’s website.

We offer a variety of ways to participate, including monthly study and reflection meetings.  Check out our newsletter by clicking HERE!

The first Sunday of every month, St. Mark’s volunteers collect a special offering at each service. The funds are donated to support eight different feeding programs in the wider Seattle community.

Jubilee Northwest

A coalition of Pacific Northwest organizations and individuals, Jubilee Northwest is the local chapter of the global Jubilee movement. Jubilee’s mission is to call for the cancellation of debts of developing countries using a fair and transparent process. The program puts a specific emphasis on reconciliation and righting centuries of exploitation. In the past year, the group has provided classes, speakers and other events for the Saint Mark’s community on the subject of debt relief.

Interested volunteers are needed to join the Jubilee leadership at Saint Mark’s.  Anyone is welcome to participate in the monthly meetings and help organize activities.

Noel House Women’s Shelter

Each night of the year, up to 25 homeless women are given free temporary shelter -- as well as an evening snack, breakfast and conversation -- in St. Mark’s Bloedel Hall. More than 1,000 different women are served annually.

Female volunteers are needed to help staff the shelter and serve meals from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.; or 9:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Help is also needed to co-ordinate group activities for volunteers, such as potlucks. Volunteers who want to be involved with Noel House but are currently unable to make a longer term commitment are welcome to team up with a regular volunteer for either a morning or evening shift to see what serving at the shelter is like.

Donations of food and other supplies are also very welcome. Please leave items, marked “For Noel House,” at the kitchen in Bloedel Hall. Contact one of the volunteers below for a complete list of needed items.

Russian Parish Partnership

The Russian Parish Partnership maintains a relationship with the Russian Orthodox HolyTrinity Church of “Kulich and Pashka” in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The program provides support to elderly members of the church and to the St. Petersburg Children's Hospice.  The RPP works to strengthen friendships between Saint Mark’s and our Russian partners. A number of delegations from Saint Mark’s have visited Russia as part of the partnership.

Volunteers are needed to help coordinate the annual Harvest Table fundraiser; host visitors from Russia and provide hospitality; and take part in quarterly planning meetings for ongoing activities.

Russian Parish Partnership page.

Saint Brigid's Banquet

Volunteers in this cooking ministry have prepared over two thousand meals for those who are hungry and homeless. We meet four times a month to cook together, and provide food for the Hammond House Women’s Shelther, the University District Teen Feed, as well as for Noel House. Volunteers don't need to be master chefs in order to join -- all are welcome!
