History of the Music Program
at Saint Mark's
Saint Marks respected music ministry
was first developed during the forty-year tenure of Canon Precentor Emeritus Peter R.
Hallock. During Dr. Hallocks leadership from 1951 to 1991, St. Marks
established a national reputation in music, particularly through the Compline Choir, the
installation of the Flentrop organ in 1965, and through Dr. Hallocks compositions.
This tradition was continued in 1992 with the
appointment of J. Melvin Butler as Organist/Choirmaster. From 1996-2002, Dent Davidson
served as Music Associate, and brought tremendous growth to the music ministry,
particularly in the area of youth music. In 2001, Brian Fairbanks was appointed Associate
for Youth Music, and now serves as Music Associate.
During the past few years, additional choirs
have been established at Saint Marks in addition to the Cathedral and Compline
Choirs, further enhancing the musical and worship life of this lively community.
