Dear Friends,

Grace has arrived!

“Grace” is the name of the first loom to arrive in the nave. She is on loan from Bonnie Tarses a member of the Seattle Weavers’ Guild. Bonnie was originally going to send “Gary” her largest loom but decided on the smaller one. “Grace” is a good name for the work we are doing! Thanks to Stephen Hartwell and Ray Miller “Grace” and the second loom, a gift to Saint Mark’s from Janet Fesq are now in the nave of the cathedral.

Donations of yarn and thread and fabric have begun to arrive – and they come with stories. There are frayed ropes from the tents of Tent City 3; hand dyed silk threads from Vietnam; cedar bark strands from a Kwakiutl chief; yarns from knitters and weavers; a piece of cloth used to wipe holy oil and tears off the Good Friday cross; embroidery floss from projects never begun; ribbons won by a parish member who raises miniature horses; and many more.

Everyone is invited, yea encouraged, yea urged, to contribute something which can be woven into beautiful coverings for the altar/table. Bring your threads, ribbons, yarns, cords, cloth to the cathedral (or mail them). There is a basket by the looms where the “story threads” are being gathered. Please include a bit of the story connected to your contribution.

There is a slight change in timing for the weaving. The looms will be warped next week and Sunday, July 20th weaving will begin. From then on, weavers will be available from Noon until 4PM each Thursday, and from 10AM until 2PM each Saturday. Come to watch; come to share in the weaving. The weavers are with us to facilitate the participation of all of us, young and not so young. If you know folks who have left the parish, invite them to bring or send threads also.

Here on staff there is good news and not so good news. Good news: Love has blossomed and it is wonderful. While working on an organic farm last summer, Becky Crook, Communications Manager, met a renewable energies engineer from Germany (A very “green” love match). After a year of phone calls, letters and visits, Becky has decided to move to Berlin to join her love and to pursue a graduate degree. Becky joined the staff in 2006 and a year ago moved into the communications role. She created the electronic version of The Rubric, remodeled Sundays and Beyond and began other fine projects. She will remain on staff until mid-September. Becky said, “I am glad and sad to be leaving Saint Mark’s at a time of so much momentum. After two years, I am grateful for the challenges that have helped me to grow, as well as for the opportunity to know and work with many dedicated staff and community members. Thank you to everyone for the incredible work you continue to do.”

Later this month the vestry will meet the potential candidates for the position of Canon Missioner. If you have questions you hope vestry members will have in mind during their conversations with the two candidates please send them to vestryquestions@saintmarks.org

Deacon Mary Shehane will be on vacation during July and Deacon Mary Gould will return for those Sundays to serve as the liturgical deacon at most of the 9AM and 11AM Eucharists. Another deacon, Mikel Morrison, at the invitation of Bishop Rickel, will serve at two 11AM celebrations of the Holy Eucharist.

Give thanks for the freedom to worship and the freedom to vote.

Blessed Independence Day,

Ralph R. Carskadden,
Priest-in-Charge
