Ministries of Hospitality and Welcome

Welcome. Inspire. Serve. Transform.

Help Saint Mark's welcome newcomers, visitors, and our community onto our campus and into our church community.

There are many ways to get involved! Some ministry groups welcome parent/child partnerships- ideal opportunities to welcome our youngest members as full participants in our community.

There are many times to get involved! Do you want to take a more active role in Sunday services, but don't know where to begin? Are you available during the week, to welcome visitors in person and on the phone?

We invite all comers to join these ministries. Got an idea for another way to welcome people to our community? Great! Contact our Deacon, Earl Grout and make a proposal! Email your idea to egrout@saintmarks.org

Sunday morning greeters

Greeters are needed, especially for the 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. services. Greeters welcome people to Saint Mark's services and provide information to newcomers. They are asked to serve once a month for about 30 minutes.

Ushers

Ushers serve approximately once every six weeks and at special services on a rotating basis. All ages are welcome and encouraged. Children of all ages welcome to serve with their parents. We will provide training on a one-to-one basis after the service. It's fun and a great way to get involved and meet a lot of great people.

Vergers

Vergers serve at the 11:00 liturgy (and at other “occasional” liturgies such as funerals, confirmations and ordinations). The ceremonial ministry of vergers adds a certain formality and dignity to the liturgy as they escort the choir in the opening procession, escort the gospel procession and escort readers and intercessors to the ambo. At Saint Mark’s, we see vergers as ministers of hospitality as well. Our vergers identify people who need communion brought to them in their pew, and greet and assist visitors and other people unfamiliar with the Cathedral.

Welcome Table

Each Sunday, a small team staffs the Welcome Table to answer questions for newcomers and regulars alike about activites going on at Saint Mark's, give directions to places on campus, and help other ministries collecting and sharing information.

Newcomer Ministry

Help Saint Mark’s practice 'Radical Hospitality' by joining with the Newcomer Ministry. Newcomers are important to us. There are many small ways you can use your talents to help welcome them to Saint Marks.

Greeters for Compline

Greeters from the Saint Mark’s community are needed to welcome people to Compline services on Sunday evenings. Compline is the first entry for many members of our community! An ideal opportunity for couples to serve together!

Food! Coffee hour and other receptions

There is no formal ministry in place organizing coffee hours and receptions, but there are still ways to participate.

Currently, coffee hour is managed by Alan DePuy, Clerke of the Works, and his staff, however there are always opportunities to assist in supplying pastries, fruit and other snacks for Sunday mornings. Some ministry groups have used this as a way of promoting their work.

Receptions for funerals and other Cathedral-wide receptions are organized as needed. If you are interested in helping out, contact Alan who will put you on a list of folks to contact when needs arise.
