The Very Rev. Steve Thomason

Steve was called to Saint Mark’s in the summer 2012 after serving in the Diocese of Arkansas, most recently as Priest Associate of St. Paul’s in Fayetteville. Previously, he had served as Rector of St. Thomas in Springdale, Arkansas, and as a Canon Missioner for the Diocese. He was ordained in 2004 after attending the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, where he earned a Master of Divinity. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, and a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Arkansas. Steve is board certified in family medicine and in hospice/palliative medicine, and practiced for more than 20 years before turning to parish ministry full-time in 2012. He and his wife Kathy have been married for 27 years and have two adult daughters.

Irene was called to Saint Mark’s in July of 2011, having recently graduated from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California. She was ordained to the priesthood here at Saint Mark’s in August of 2011. Previous to her call to ministry, Irene earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. She has been a member of the Washington State Bar Association since 1987 and practiced as public defender and Judge Pro Tempore.

Earl came to Saint Mark’s on 1st Advent, 2009. Besides serving on the cathedral’s pastoral care team and AIDS care team, Earl is focused on our ministry of hospitality to newcomers. As a deacon he represents the servant ministry of Christ, not only in our worship liturgy, but by helping members connect with opportunities to live their faith in service to others.

The Reverend Stephen Crippen

Deacon Stephen works primarily with the environmental-justice ministries and the Eucharistic visitors at St. Mark’s, and has led discernment groups for parishioners. He also serves on the preaching rota and shares liturgical duties with Deacon Earl. Stephen’s primary ministry is his private psychotherapy practice, and he also works as a trainer and consultant for the Diocese of Olympia.

Michael will be ordained at Saint Mark's on June 13 and begins his curacy training here at Saint Mark’s in July 2013

Michael Carroccino, his wife Kristin, and their two young children are excited to be returning to the Diocese of Olympia after a three-year sojourn at the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. Before seminary, Michael spent seven years in Bellingham building and remodeling houses with a small crew of fellow carpenters. He most enjoys time spent with his family – and particular when it involves the outdoors: Michael has training as a wilderness guide and still enjoys hiking, climbing, and boating. During seminary, he developed particular interests in family formation and narrative leadership. He and his wife have committed much energy to fostering spiritual practices in their home life, and they spent last summer on the road together visiting Episcopal churches across the country to hear the stories they tell. Canon Dr. Mel Butler

Mel Butler has been Saint Mark’s Canon Musician since 1992 where he directs three choirs and manages the entire music program. He has also taught at the University of Washington and the Eastman School of Music. He performs organ concerts nationally and internationally and is a published composer. Also a professional violist, Mel performs regularly with the Onyx Chamber Players.

Brian Fairbanks

Brian directs the Choir School and conducts three of cathedral choirs: the Youth Ensemble, Women's Choir and the Gallery Choir; and he is Associate Director for the Cathedral Choir. He is the principal organist for services in Thomsen Chapel. Brian also conducts and teaches chamber music and composition at Bella Musica’s Woodwind Camp; and for six seasons (2001-07) was music director for the award-winning music theatre program at Shorecrest High School in Shoreline. He is the former conductor of Amabile Choir/Northwest Girlchoir, and the Everett and Seattle Junior Symphonies. He has produced several acclaimed recordings for both The Esoterics and The Tudor Choir, earning favorable reviews in such international journals as Fanfare and Gramaphone magazines. He has degrees in music history and conducting from the University of Washington; his music is published by Paraclete Press.

Rebekah Gilmore

Rebekah is a freelance soprano, choral conductor, and church musician in the Pacific Northwest. She performs regularly with the Tudor Choir, the Byrd Ensemble, the St. James Cathedral Cantorei and Choral Arts Northwest. Rebekah can also be heard on numerous movie, TV, and video game soundtracks. Rebekah is the founding director of the Ave Renaissance Women’s Choir in Seattle and currently serves both St. James and St. Mark’s Cathedrals as a soloist and conductor specializing in children’s music. Rebekah is the managing director of the Tallis Scholars Summer School USA and she maintains a private voice studio in Seattle. Rebekah is a graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

Becky Morrill

Becky has been on staff at Saint Mark’s since 2002. She holds a Masters of Divinity degree from the University of Chicago. She enjoys supporting the liturgical life of the Saint Mark’s community, with a particular passion for increasing the liturgical knowledge and involvement of laypeople and fully involving children and youth in liturgical ministry. In addition to her work at St. Mark’s Becky also coordinates many diocesan liturgies including ordinations and Diocesan Convention.

Cindy Spencer

Cindy has been involved in children’s, youth and family ministry in a variety of churches since 1988, arriving at Saint Mark’s to become the Coordinator for Children and Youth Ministries in 2002. She received a Master’s of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1994, and was accredited as a Godly Play Teacher Trainer in 2002. She believes that all children are invited into a relationship with God, and that our role as the church is to provide enriching places and programs where this relationship can grow and develop. Cindy is married to Heath and has three children, now in college and high school.

Liz has been a full time employee since 2005, but began her connection with the Cathedral during Holy Week of 1994. She has also worked taken on a variety of projects at the Diocese of Olympia. She holds a BA in history and politics from Mt. Holyoke College and an MLIS from the University of Rhode Island School of Library Science. She came to Saint Mark's after 13 years as a professional stage manager in Seattle. Liz attends worship services with her children and is a teacher in the Godly Play classrooms.

Alan is a native Californian who began his professional career as an organist at the age of nine. He attended undergraduate school at Chapman University and graduate school at Arizona State University and studied organ performance with Robert Clark and Kimberly Marshall. He was 1st place winner in four American Guild of Organist- sponsored competitions. Alan served as organist at Holy Family Cathedral and Crystal Cathedral in California; and organist/choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix, Arizona and as Artistic Director for the Cathedral Center for the Arts in Phoenix, Arizona. Alan has been involved in and has supervised many restoration and building projects in his career.

Karen Smythers

Karen started her position as Accounting Manager with Saint Mark’s in 2011, although she has been an active part of the Saint Mark’s community for about five years. She has a Master’s in Professional Accounting from CWU and experience as an audit associate with Clark Nuber as well as non-profit financial experience and over 10 years in management for Whole Foods Market. At Saint Mark’s, she and her family have been involved with Saint Brigid’s Banquet, the altar guild, and (most recently) Godly Play.

Erik began his position as Accounting Associate/Database Manager in 2012. A Seattle-area native, he has a B.A. in Political Science from Pacific Lutheran University. Erik was previously a manager in the banking industry. He and his wife Jenny have been parishioners at Saint Mark’s since 2008, and were married at the cathedral in 2009.

He still selects books and music for the Shop, keeps the financial reporting straight and proclaims the latest news through Shop website and Facebook pages. Now full time.

Kelly Mulligan joined Saint Marks in 2011 as the Program Director of Saint Mark’s Preschool. Kelly brings with her over 10 years experience in assessing and supporting effective early childhood development. In addition, she has over 15 years experience counseling parents on healthy communication and parenting styles. Kelly has over 12 years teaching experience ranging in ages 1- 10, both as a Seattle Public School teacher and a cooperative preschool teacher. Before teaching Kelly worked for many years as a child advocate for Broadview Emergency Shelter Program. Kelly has three children who have all attended St. Mark’s Preschool.

The Right Reverend Cabby Tennis

Bishop Cabell Tennis studied first to be a lawyer and later followed a calling to the priesthood. He served parishes in Portsmouth, VA and in Buffalo, NY, before being called in 1970 to be the Dean here at Saint Marks. He was elected and consecrated the ninth Episcopal Bishop of Delaware in 1986 where he was active in social justice programs. Bishop Tennis has served the national Episcopal Church as a member of the Committee on Sexual Exploitation, and the Joint Commission on Program Budget and Finance and remains a member of the House of Bishops. He has been a member of multiple bar associations as well as the Academy of Family Mediators, and now belongs to the Association for Conflict Resolution. Retired now, he is member of the Medical Quality Assurance Commission (WA state), the Committee on Public Legal Education and a mediator with the Dispute Resolution Center of King County.
Bishop Tennis presides from time to time at worship, provides pastoral care at the request of the Dean, and remains active in justice programs at St. Mark's and in the greater Seattle community.

The Reverend Mike Jackson

Mike, a career officer in the Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment of Canada (Korea, Gaza Strip, Cyprus, Congo), resigned to study theology (McGill University) following his role as chief press officer for Royal Tours and VIP visits to Canada. He was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II and also awarded the Canadian Forces Peacekeeping Medal. Mike was ordained in 1965 and served in northern Canada, dioceses of Northern California, Spokane and Olympia. He was associate rector/parish administrator of Epiphany Parish of Seattle before retiring. Part of the Cathedral community for twelve years, associated with it for over 40 years, Mike currently serves on its governance committee and is the diocesan representative to the vestry.


The Rev. Sue Reid


The Reverend Sue Reid

The Rev. Sue Reid retired from the staff of Saint Mark’s in January 2009 having joined the staff in 2004 after moving from Indiana. Currently she serves as a Sunday supply priest for Holy Apostles Chinese Episcopal congregation in Bellevue and other churches in the Diocese of Olympia. She also works part time on the house staff at Town Hall Seattle and hosts a bed and breakfast space in West Seattle. Her principal ministry at Saint Mark’s now is at the Thursday 7 a.m. Eucharist.

The Reverend Carla Robinson

Rev. Carla Robinson, a graduate of Concordia Seminary, St Louis, was a Lutheran pastor for 13 years before being received into the Episcopal Church in 2001. She was a member of St Mark’s cathedral for years. She served on the Bishop’s staff for four years. She was ordained in 2009 and was curate at Resurrection, Bellevue and then was vicar of All Saints, Seattle. She has been a priest associate at St Mark’s since January 2013.


The Rev. Pat Taylor


The Reverend Patricia Taylor

Pat Taylor has been in this diocese since 1961. She was a nurse until she was ordained in 1984. As deacon and priest she served in five parishes before retiring and coming to Saint Mark’s in 2001. She was once Diocesan Hospital Chaplain coordinator and has done extensive work with Seattle’s homeless community.
