Canaday House Opportunities
This page was last updated on July 28, 2010.
The Downtown Emergency Services Center (DESC) has named it's newest building offering permanent, supportive housing to men and women in honor of Nick Canaday, former parishioner of Saint Mark's and longtime volunteer at DESC.
Located within walking distance of Saint Mark's, Canaday House will provide 83 supportive housing units with full kitchens and bathrooms for chronically homeless men and women affected by severe and persistent mental illness. Twenty-five of these units will be reserved for homeless veterans with disabilities. Canaday House is being constructed at 424 Minor Avenue, in the Cascade neighborhood of South Lake Union. It will be ready for occupancy in late summer or early fall this year.
The Board of DESC, in its approval of the name for this new project stated:
Nick not only directly helped the men and women in DESC's shelter, but also helped the agency as a whole form key philosophies and practices in working with people experiencing homelessness – practices that DESC still uses to this day. He was a tireless advocate on behalf of the homeless people served by DESC, both amongst members at Saint Mark’s Cathedral and within the Seattle community as a whole. Thanks in part to Nick’s passion for caring for this often-voiceless population and his steadfast advocacy, DESC has been able to take Nick’s teachings and turn them into realties through our housing programs.
Canaday House was officially opened on August 4, 2010. Learn more at www.canadayhouse.org

Quilt Raffle
We have wonderful news regarding the Canaday House Quilt Raffle. After the 11:00 a.m. service on August 1, 2010, Canon Rebecca McClain dipped her hands into the bowls of tickets and selected two winning tickets. We are pleased to announce that Penny Reid won the double quilt, and Melinda Kmitta won the twin quilt. Congratulations to you both. However, Canaday House also won because the raffle raised $838 to support the Quilt Project. Thank you to all who bought tickets to support these endeavors. We appreciate and thank you for your generosity.
